Lightroom HDR Findings – 5 shot HDR produces better tone in LR

Testing shots in Folder: 2015-11-18 Absolute Avenue Mississauga

Even though J. Kost stated that LR uses on two shots, I ran a 5 shot HDR through (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) using LR and 5 seem to have a smoother tonal result.

http://jeffgardner.zenfolio.com/p425191656

1,2,3,4,5 processed by LR HDR and it is the best. 1-5

1,5 processed by LR HDR 1&5 and its tone is not as smooth as using 5 shots

1,2,3 processed by LR HDR 1-3 and its  dark as only the -2 to 0 ev were used.  Still I like that version because I like darkness.

Lightroom forgets Import Screen Settings – Sort order always wrong

For some reason lightroom  keeps forgetting the settings on the import dialog boxes.  I set the options I want, but they are forgotten when I go back and do another Import   (sort order and organize into one folder are always unselected). In order to fix this create a new preset with the sort order and organizing to one folder selected and save the preset.

The next time you use the import dialogue the import settings on the screen will default to none however the sort order and the organize into one folder is retained from one session to the next.

Micro Focus Adjustment – How To

As my aging eyes require a bit of help focusing (especially for nature shots) – I have found that the preset auto focus settings are NOT always reliable as released by the manufacturer for each camera body and lens.

To save me time, I put the following information together from several sources,  the first section from: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/cameras/1ds3_af_micoadjustment.html and the second section from Spyder Lenscal.

Both Canon Micro Auto Focus and Nikon AF Fine Tune allow micro focus adjustments to calibrate a camera body to a specific set of lenses.

Here is my technique:

Firstly you can test your lens to see if it is properly calibrated already and does not need any further adjustment.

  1. Download the file www.jeffgardner.ca/ImagesJG/TestPattern/Testpattern.gif  pattern
  2. Using a calibrated monitor, display the above file in Photoshop at 100% (unscaled, exactly 100% on a screen and not on a print).  You should see with your eyes the Moire interference Patterns.
  3. Place the camera and lens on a tripod so that its 100% parallel to the screen (for short lenses, a small mirror lying against the screen will display the front of the lens exactly).  50 times the focal length.  For 50mm lens, 50*500=2.5m (25m for a 500mm lens, perhaps a laptop outside in this case).  The test pattern should be symmetrical
  4. Using Live View – manually focus the lens on the computer monitor test image.  Look for peek pattern visibility, not any particular pattern.
  5. Note the distance indicator on the lens carefully and the state of the image on the LiveView camera screen.
  6. Switch off LiveView and press the shutter button half way down to auto focus the lens.  The lens should not move –  the distance indicator should be identical to step 4.
  7. Reactivate LiveView – the image should be identical to step 4.

iMessages on Mac

Copied from

http://www.appleworld.today/blog/2015/8/6/how-to-set-up-mac-os-x-messages-to-send-sms-texts

Recently I noted that, for whatever reason, Messages on my Mac quit offering the option to send folks messages in any format but its native iMessage format. Since some of my friends, relatives and business associates are still heathens and don’t have Macs or iPhones, I had to rejigger things so I could send simple text messages.

If you’re facing the same problem, here’s how you send SMS texts from OS X Messages (You’ll need both your Mac and iPhone handy):

Make sure your Mac’s running OS X Yosemite (10.10 or higher) and your iPhone is running iOS 8.x.
Click on the Messages app in your Mac to open it.
Go to your iPhone. Tap Settings > Messages.
Tap Text Message Forwarding.
You’ll see a list of all your devices linked to your Apple ID. Choose the one you want to send and receive messages and select On.
You’ll see a six-digit code pop up in Messages on your Mac. An alert window will appear marked Text Message Forwarding will show up on the iPhone.
Enter the six digit code displayed in Messages on the Mac into the alert window on the iPhone and tap Allow.
Text Message.jpg
Voila! You’re ready. When someone sends a text message to your iPhone, it will appear inside Messages in Yosemite. And you can now reply with a text message from your Mac — or start a new text message. To start a new message:

In the Messages window, click the Compose button to start a new message.
Enter a name, an email address, or a phone number in the To field.
Enter message text in the field at the bottom of the window. You can also drag files, such as a photo, to the field at the bottom of the window.
Press Return on your keyboard to send the message.

Lightroom 6 CC 2015.1 – Canon 5Ds and 5DsR Tether – Mac, Windows and Capture One Problem Fixed (Solved)

The USB  tethering for LR 6 CC was not working for this 5DSR – it cycles as if it connects then disconnects every second.

Adobe is using an old version of code from Canon – simply copy the Canon code from EOS Utility V3 to the correct location for LR to use.

(Update – on Jan 6/2016 I updated to DPP 4 and this broke the LR tether again. I had to restore from DPP 3).

Capture One: Here is a link to fix Capture One where I sourced the fix and adapted it for LR: http://www.zachardycapture.com/2015/06/21/native-canon-5dsr-tethering-in-capture-one-8-3/

Windows LR: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3861646 (about half way down the post)

Screen Shot 2015-07-28 at 17.45.05Mac – Step by Step Instructions:

1) Download EOS Utility 3.2.21 (or higher) and install.

2) Right Click on LR Icon in Dock select Option > Show In Finder

3) Click on Adobe LR and Show Package Contents (as per the example on the right).

4) in Finder navigate to:

/Applications/Adobe Lightroom/Adobe Lightroom.app

Click on Adobe Lightroom.app, right click – show package contents

Click on /Contents/PlugIns/tether-canon-plugin.lrplugin right click – show package contents

Click on /Contents/PlugIns/tether-canon-app right click – show package contents

Click on /Contents/Frameworks/EDSDK.framework/Versions/A

Create a folder called “archive” and copy the contents of folder “A” to Archive as a backup in case you need to restore.

5) Now open a new Finder window and navigate to:

/Applications/Canon Utilities/EOS Utility/EU3/EOS Utility 3.app right click – show package contents

/Contents/Frameworks/EDSDK.framework/Versions/A

Copy the contents of folder A to the folder in step 4.  (a total of 5 items).

6) Start LR, tethering should work now.

Hope this helps – its working perfectly for me.

Lightroom 6 CC – Startup Issues / First Impressions/ Whats New

On April 21, 2015 Adobe released Lightroom 6.  I downloaded it and promptly found I could not start it.  I would see the splash screen for an instant and then nothing.  The solution to that problem is here. (instructions logoff of Adobe Creative Cloud and back in again).

If you are part of the monthly CC version, you can download LR6 at no additional charge from the Creative Cloud App.

If you wish to purchase LR 6 outright – Adobe seems to make finding the link difficult, you can download an upgrade for $79 US or purchase a new copy for $149 from here.

First Impression:

Its too early to determine if its stable, but a quick pass through most of the modules did not turn up any issues for me me.  Time will tell.

One of the key features is that its suppose to be faster.  It did recognize my graphics card and start using it.  It does seem a bit faster switching from one image to another.  There is a new preference that I turned on that helps in this regard in number 3 below.

During the upgrade, it only copied some of my preferences.  Fortunatly I copied my LR 5 Catalogue and all of the associated files so I was able to start LR 5 and 6 at the same time and manually copy the preferences from one version to the other.

Whats New:

  1. LR 6 uses 64 bit and the Graphics card (so it should be faster) so for me this is the biggest driver to using the new software. The Panos and HDR are the other drivers I have (links to demo these documented below).  All modern versions of Mac should be capable of utilizing the new features and speed.  Windows users will need 64 bit and hardware that a GPU that is supported by LR although LR does also support “touch” now for Windows.
  2. New LR feature gems are summarized below or here by Adobe.
  3. Create Pano’s in LR and edit the results in camera raw,  HDR, Facial Detection, free demo  overview from my hero Julieanne Kost.
  4. There is a new preference: Catalog Settings: File Handling.  Change the Standard Preview Size to the size of your Screen.  This should improve performance and set the standard preview to match your screen (no larger/smaller = better performance when editing at 1:1).
    Screen Shot 2015-04-22 at 12.57.05
  5. Under Import you can add to a Collection.  Possibly adding to a CC collection would help use LR Mobile on a Pad. Will need to test.
  6. You can now filter for Collections so you can find them again
  7. Under Preferences Performance, ensure it is using your Graphics card – which will be set by default if your hardware is supported. Screen Shot 2015-04-22 at 13.01.22
  8. In the Develop>Basic Panel> Shift Double Click White & Black to expand the tone to use the entire histogram.
  9. Slue of small improvements:  You can copy pins from the brush to other photos, Pet Eye green removal, new Web galleries for export.

I will update my blog as I have more experience with the product.

Mac Finder – Change the Size Each Column (Default)

When in Finder Column view its handy to have the default set a bit larger.  At the bottom of the window hold the OPTION key while dragging the || handle to the desired size.  Right click || to Right Size all Columns Individually (which would be a nice default if I could figure that out).

At the bottom of the Finder windowScreen Shot 2015-01-05 at 16.14.31

Lightroom – Reports no Trash on Drive

Lightroom incorrectly reports that there is no Trash folder (or ability to restore deleted images).  Believe it or not, all you have to do is within Finder, create a folder on the Root of your image library (where the images are stored, not the Catalogue if they are different) and delete it within Finder.  Seems to fix problem.
